FREDERICTON - New Brunswick Liberal leadership hopeful Brian Gallant was in the capital city today for meetings with Liberal Opposition members. On his way back to the Legislature from lunch, Gallant was asked for his stance on abortion since his two competitors discussed it in the media earlier this week. However, Gallant refused to comment on the subject.
Liberal leadership candidate, Mike Murphy, got tangled up into giving his stance on abortion after it was brought up on the social networking site Twitter a few days ago. Murphy went on record stating his personal view was against abortion, but if in power would follow the provincial law which allows a woman to have an abortion on the consent of two doctors. He added that if he was Premier, and the issue of abortion was opened again, he would put it to his caucus for a free vote.
The other leadership candidate, Nick Duivenvoorden, also gave his position this week. He said he's in favor of abortion as a last resort, but understood it was a decision between a woman and her doctor.
Gallant, however, preferred not to comment today. He said he was on his way to meetings and would discuss it another time with a more thoughtful response.
The issue has been in the media since early in the week. Gallant was asked by various media outlets for his position on abortion since that time, but so far he's yet to go on record with his stance.
